EMS Chief Recruitment Process
The City of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (population 32,613) is seeking a dynamic leader with exceptional interpersonal, leadership skills, and labor relations experience, to lead the city’s, well established, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department. The City of Sun Prairie is located immediately northeast of the City of Madison in Dane County; 75 miles west of Milwaukee, and 155 miles northwest of Chicago. The City of Sun Prairie has been experiencing diversified growth with a mix of commercial, residential, industrial development, and continues to be one of the fastest growing residential communities in Wisconsin.
Sun Prairie EMS provides Advance Life Support transport services to the City of Sun Prairie and the Town of Bristol through an intergovernmental agreement. The Sun Prairie EMS Department serves approximately 35,500 residents within a 46.5 square mile area. The Sun Prairie EMS Department is also a member of the Dane County ALS Intergovernmental Agreement. This Agreement is to provide the closest ALS unit to all high level calls in Dane County, as determined by priority medical dispatch. Sun Prairie EMS transports to all seven major hospitals in the Madison area.
Sun Prairie EMS staffs two stations with a combination of 12 FT and 10 LTE employees, with a budget of 1.67 million. Each station has one ambulance and two paramedics covering 24 hours/7 days per week, answering a total of 2467 emergency responses in 2016. The Sun Prairie Volunteer Fire Department responds to assist EMS on all high level calls. The EMS Chief reports directly to the City Administrator.
The EMS Chief must possess demonstrated leadership, supervisory, employee relations, labor relations, strategic planning, technology and budgetary skills, together with a strong background in EMS operations. A Bachelor’s degree in an associated discipline; a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of EMS is essential. The candidate must have, or must have recently held, a paramedic certification/license, as well as have worked in an organization that provided EMS.
The City is looking for an individual that has had a history of public communication skills and community interaction. The ability to work cooperatively with organized labor and neighboring departments whether career, paid on-call, and/or volunteer is essential.
